TheAvettBros-HiRes THE AVETT BROTHERS

> Headliner on Saturday, August 22
8:15 p.m. on Main Stage

In their 13 years of performing and touring, from small clubs in their native Southeast to big arenas around the world, the Avett Brothers have spent lots of time thinking about variety, dynamics and song placement. Early on, they just wanted to create the right mood and arc for frenetic shows full of ringing acoustic guitars and banjos, chirpy vocal harmonies, lots of hooting, hollering, hand-clapping and foot-stomping. When the Avetts took that explosive sound into recording studios, they initially sought to recreate the energy of their shows. Their earliest full-length studio albums for the Concord indie label Ramseur — Country Was (2002), A Carolina Jubilee (2003) and Mignonette (2004) — were fine documents of specific moments in time, but it wasn’t until the Avetts recorded Emotionalism, in 2007, that they began thinking more in the tradition of great LPs from rock’s golden age — albums like The Band’s 1968 milestone Music from Big Pink or Neil Young’s 1972 classic Harvest. The Avett Brothers’ subsequent releases — I and Love and You, in 2009, last year’s The Carpenter, and now Magpie and the Dandelion, all produced by Rick Rubin and released on American Recordings — have thrust the Brothers into the pantheon of quintessential American bands. When the Avetts think of variety, dynamics and song placement today, the results are more novelistic. Today, the their narrative folk-rock tells bigger stories about what it means to be Southern, to be American, to be alive.

RRandolphROBERT RANDOLPH AND THE FAMILY BAND

> Headliner on Friday, August 21
8:15 p.m. on Main Stage

Robert Randolph & The Family Band first gained national attention with the release of the album Live at the Wetlands in 2002. The band followed with three studio recordings over the next eight years—Unclassified, Colorblind, and We Walk This Road—which, together with tireless touring and unforgettable performances at such festivals as Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, won them an expanding and passionate fan base. Randolph’s unprecedented prowess on his instrument garnered him a spot on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list, and also attracted the attention of such giants as Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana, who have collaborated with him on stage and in the studio. “What I’ve learned from being around those guys—and you never really notice it until the moment is away from you—is that it’s really important to them that someone keeps original music going, that you’re not just trying to be like everybody else,” he says. “Eric really wants to know what’s going on now, he’s always going ‘Show me that lick again!’—they’re like little kids, and that’s really the great part about it. It makes me think that I need to keep getting better, to stay excited and keep trying to be innovative and keep growing.”

> Performing Saturday, August 22
6:30 p.m. on Main Stage

In 2008, singer and songwriter Arleigh Kincheloe said goodbye to her hometown hideaway in the Catskill Mountains and moved to New York City to start Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds. In the years since, the group has performed more than 600 shows, released two full-length albums and an EP produced by Randy Jackson (American Idol), and enchanted tastemakers ranging from The Wall Street Journal and LA Times to Glamour, USA Today, and The New Yorker. They have shared the stage with such heavyweights as Gov’t Mule, Dr. John, Trombone Shorty, The Avett Brothers, Counting Crows, and Galactic, and have turned audiences into believers through appearances on the festival circuit at Bonnaroo, Firefly, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Voodoo Music Experience and many more. Ultimately, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds stand poised to shake up rock ‘n’ roll all around the world. “This all stems back to why I loved performing and singing to begin with,” Arleigh leaves off. “I want to make crowds happy and see them smile and dance. Singing brings me so much joy. I hope our music does the same for everyone.”

2536788BILLY STRINGS & DON JULIN

> Performing Friday, August 21
6:30 p.m. on Main Stage
> Performing Saturday, August 22
3:30 p.m. on Main Stage

Incendiary American roots duo Billy Strings & Don Julin tap into the vein of the earliest bluegrass music on their new album Fiddle Tune X,  back when bluegrass was a rough-and-tumble art form pouring out of the Appalachian mountains, made with great virtuosity and huge attitude. With just two instruments (guitar and mandolin) and one voice, this duo has been tearing up stages across America and generating huge buzz based on their intense live shows. Drenched in sweat, grimacing like a banshee, howling like a bluegrass berserker, and picking with such ferocity that he’s been known to break three strings in one song, 22 year old guitarist and singer Billy Strings could have tumbled out of coal country in the old mountains, tattoos and all, but actually hails from Michigan, where he met mandolinist Don Julin. Older in years and experience, Strings’ musical partner Julin has carved out a lengthy career at the forefront of acoustic mandolin music, known for his wide versatility, powerful picking technique, and remarkable creativity on this humble instrument. On stage, the two egg each other on to more and more intense riffs and improvised breaks, pushing harder and harder on their own abilities to try to break through to new levels of musicianship. There’s a reason that they were called “the unholy child of Pantera and Tony Rice” by The Bluegrass Situation, and they show this intensity on their new album, Fiddle Tune X.

t1guy-202THAT 1 GUY

> Performing Saturday, August 22
5:00 p.m. on Main Stage
> Performing Saturday, August 22
10:00 p.m. Silent Disco after party

With an extensive and amazing track record of unique and imaginative performances featuring his curious instrument and copious amounts of originality, Mike Silverman, aka That1Guy, has set himself apart as a true one-of-a-kind talent that rivals any other artist currently in the entertainment industry. Averaging 150-200 shows a year all over North America and Canada, he has been a consistent favorite at such festivals as: Wakarusa, Electric Forest, Big Day out, All Good, Bella, High Sierra, Summer Meltdown, Montreal Jazz Festival, and many more. He was also the ʻTap Water Awardʼ winner at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for best musical act. His legendary collaboration and multiple tours with Buckethead as The Frankenstein Brothers has further cemented his virtuoso story as a creative visionary as well. His innovation continues to soar with the announcement of another tour kicking off in January 2015. Along with his pioneering main instrument, The Magic Pipe, a monstrosity of metal, strings, and electronics, facilitates the dynamic live creation of music and magic in ways only That1Guy can conjure, expect to see magic as well now integrated into the already clever performance. With this addition of incorporating magic seamlessly into his live shows, he has legitimately achieved an all inclusive audio/visual performance unlike anything experienced before. “So much of my music has miraculous qualities to it because itʼs hard to tell whatʼs going on. There are lots of slights of hand and sonic misdirection. It feels like I was meant to do magic.”

Screenshot 2015-08-06 13.24.45JACK FIVECOATE

> Performing Saturday, August 22
4:30 p.m. on Short’s Truck Side Stage

Acoustic Roots Reggae singer/songwriter Jack Fivecoate came to Piper Street Studios with a plan in hand. Having already funded his debut EP with a very successful Kickstarter campaign, the multi-instrumentalist could focus on bringing his soulful vision to life with the help of producer extraordinaire Matt Mansfield/Piper Street Sound (of DubConscious, KingRat, FLT RSK and Dialect Trio). The two hit it off and immediately began working, the singer laying the basic tracks and Mansfield engineering, arranging, and securing guest performances to turn Fivecoate’s elegantly understated acoustic based  arrangements into full-fledged Roots grooves. Within months of starting work on the album at Piper Street Studios Jack was asked to tour with conscious Dancehall phenom Matisyahu. Fivecoate’s harmonica skills eventually led him onto the stage performing regularly with the vocalist, and his skills in the kitchen led to steady employment on tour as the vegetarian’s personal chef. During this period of touring, distance aside, Fivecoate and Mansfield stayed connected and forged tight rhythm tracks that stay connected to Jack’s lyrics and phrasing and reflect his personality. With attention to detail each backing track fits like a glove around Jack’s acoustic guitar based performances.

The Mainstays are a funk & soul band based in Kalamazoo, MI. Featuring Andrew Schrock (singer/songwriter), Dutch Conway (bass), and Nate Heymoss (guitar) of Michigan’s funk/dance band Funktion, the band draws heavily from the groovy elements that made Funktion a bonafide dance party, while crafting dynamic, insightful, and almost folk-influenced songs. Half-beast/Half-man Paul Bauer behind the drum kit and the downright dirty playing of Tom McRockin Eldred (BMF Band) on keys bring the sound fully together, and provide that elusive answer to your missed connection.

Long ago there were many tales of a nameless, anomalous, blues ghost that roamed the lands in search of a vessel through which to expatiate its proficiency. It found a man named Ricky Tate. Shortly after, Rick heard tales of The Zookeeper, a man with a steel hand who fed only on ale, whiskey and blues. The boundless strings of fate connected them and the chronicle began.

Born in 2008, Morseville Bridge is a young, yet enigmatic group of multifaceted musicians. The triptych of members include Ryan Gregory, Thomas Hartwell and Mark Perez, long-time friends who met in highschool and emerged from various other Flint, Michigan musical projects to become Morseville Bridge. They named the group after an abandoned bridge in Montrose, Michigan, where the three would skip school, hang out and jam. Their creative and ambidextrous approach to instrumentation (Ryan was previously a drummer, Mark a singer, in respective pre-MB projects) is precisely what gives them such an original sound. Morseville blend bluesy organic guitar slides with darker experimental instrumentation to create catchy pop-rock riffs that ensure their songs remain etched in your memory. Singer and lead guitarist Ryan Gregory captivates with a voice that is at once misanthropic and cheerful; his lyrics intersperse childhood nostalgia with social reflections; he is fascinated with contradictions and juxtapositions. Drummer/trumpet player Thomas Hartwell beats time on an unorthodox modified drum kit while simultaneously adding texture and rhythm- playing tambourine with his feet. Mark Perez plays bass (here electric, there acoustic), timbale drums, and sings. Morseville Bridge set themselves apart with their thoughtful and unusual approach to the band, from start to finish. Touring in a 1984 maroon hearse named Rosie, customizing their tunings and using found objects as drum cymbals, they even create a breathtaking and energizing live show with 20-odd vintage lamps set up all over the stage. In an ocean of over-polished and hyper-produced rock and pop acts, Morseville Bridge maintain committed to the ideology of indie.
